BGSA House League Frequently Asked Questions – 2018

BGSA House League Frequently Asked Questions – 2018

  • When does the season start and finish? The 2018 houseleague season for T-ball to Midget starts the week of May 7th. T-ball to Midget will finish the end of August with their Night of Champs.

  • Can I play with my friends? Players are with other girls their own age, according to the year they are born. We cannot promise to honor all requests as we get many and we want to ensure that each team has a similar level of skill. If you need a specific request due to uncontrollable circumstances, please note on your registration form and we can try. If you are new and wanting to play with a friend, also note that…. this is a situation we will GUARANTEE you can be on your friend’s team to welcome you and make you feel comfortable in your FIRST year. We try to spread new players across the teams as well as skilled players.

  • What equipment do I need? All players will need a glove and batting helmet with a face mask. Running shoes or cleats are acceptable. Pitchers in the older age groups may wish to purchase their own pitching mask. Fielding masks are also recommended but not mandatory.

  • Where do I play? Permits have not been assigned yet from the city, we will update this information as soon as possible. All diamonds are located West of the 410.

    Mite =
    Squirt =
    Bantam =
    Midget =Final field assignments will be on the schedule provided by the coach.

  • How often are the games? Based on the number of teams in each division, there are usually 2 games one week and one game the next, about 20-22 games throughout the season. Tball and midget divisions play only one night a week.

  • How often are practices? On the night you do not have a game (example if you usually play Tuesdays and Thursdays), the coach may have a practice. The coach, with consensus from the parents, may choose other times for practices, especially early in the season.

  • What does the fee include? The fee includes the uniform (hat, jersey, shorts and socks), a team and individual photo, Opening day/Fun Day festivities, a mid- season tournament with trophy or medal (Mite to bantam-top 4 teams) and Day of Champs trophy or medal (all teams), usually a hotdog, chips, drink. Tball also includes a graduation ceremony approximately 6 weeks into the season to transition from Learn to Play to T-Ball games. Equipment (Bats, balls and back-catcher gear) is supplied to the coach by the league.

  • What if I am on vacation or busy with activities? In May many players are still finishing spring activities, and you may have summer vacation planned. Please tell your coach ahead of time so they can plan, and call extra players if need be. If you will be unavailable for a few weeks in May finishing off other activities, please note that on the registration form.

  • What if I’ve never played before? We welcome new players at any age level. You will be placed in a division based on your age, not your skill level. It is helpful in the older age groups (bantam and midget) to be able to throw and catch as there are many experienced players and safety is a factor. Visit our Skills Clinic section to learn more about FREE (with paid registration, 1 clinic is free) indoor clinics available in the winter/spring.

  • What is Select? The Select program is our all-star program. Later in May there will be try-outs and 12 players from each division from mite to midget will be chosen to play in tournaments in southern Ontario. The players continue to play in houseleague while playing Select. An additional fee and additional practice times are required.

  • What happens next after I register? Once you register, we will work to make teams in April. A coaches meeting will take place the middle-end of April and your coach will call you the last week of April-1st week in May to have a practice, give you your uniform and schedule and meet your team mates.

  • Are there any weekend activities? Houseleague is run Monday to Thursday. Divisions from minor mite to bantam will have a one day tournament, either a Saturday or Sunday, in June or July. This will be on your schedule so that you can plan ahead.

  • When do I play?

Tball/Learn to Play = Thursdays only
Minor Mite =Mondays and Wednesdays
Mite = Tuesdays and Thursdays
Squirt = Mondays and Wednesdays
Novice = Tuesdays and Thursdays
Bantam = Mondays and Wednesdays
Midget = Thursdays only

  • What is Learn to Play? The Learn to Play/Tball program has been adapted from Softball Ontario. This program works through skills and drills and fun activities each week to develop the skills needed at the 5 and 6 year old level. There will be a progression into a modified t-ball game as the season progresses. There is no score kept. Parents are encouraged to participate at the request of the coach. We recognize that it is important for players to have the skills necessary before being put in game situations.

  • Are there any clinics I can attend? We will have indoor clinics. Times/locations will be announced as soon as we receive the gyms from the school board. This MAY not take place until the new year.
